Stormhouse ジ・エクスペリメント

Being generally well-written and interesting, it is a pretty solid claustrophobic story as an indie horror flick. Good dialogue, nice pace, and the effective ending. Considering the budget and likely time constraints they were under, we should understand some of the mediocre choices they made. Yet the acting was good, and it was obvious the talent was there.

Grabbers グラバーズ

This film is a nice example to show that we do not need a huge budget to deliver a first rate comedy-horror film with a witty script. The combination of CGI and practical are very effective and well done. Its overall concept and whimsical tale of alien creatures attacking the inhabitants of a small Irish village would provide laughs and scare in generous quantities reminding you of a certain movie with dinosaurs.

Brave メリダとおそろしの森

Another visual feast and a solid Pixar film. With its beautiful and moving new fairy tale, "Brave" fits seamlessly into this genre. It has everything fine Pixar films should have: a wonderful setting, fantastic CGI, beautiful and interesting characters, (Merida alone is such an interesting and adorable character) and a lot of heart. For some, this might not be Pixar's best, but it holds up to extremely high standards.

The Amazing Spiderman アメイジング・スパイダーマン

A reboot of the Spider-Man movie franchise. Tobey Maguire（トビー・マグワイア） is replaced by Andrew Garfield（アンドリュー・ガーフィールド） in the protagonist role of Peter Parker. His main love interest switches from Mary-Jane Watson to Gwen Stacy, and the villain in this installment is Dr Curt Connors aka Lizard. As expected, this reboot goes back to the beginning when Peter Parker becomes Spider-Man only it is told in a rather different way to the other volumes.

We Bought a Zoo 幸せへのキセキ

This is a beautiful movie, full of life, truthfully acted, beautifully shot, and lovingly directed by Cameron Crowe（キャメロン・クロウ）. You can expect to cry but it is also funny with levity coming just when you need it. Matt Damon（マット・デイモン） was brilliant as the heartbroken but hopeful father, and all the kids were brilliant. Anyone willing to open his or her heart will fall in love with this movie and will be glad to find there are still artists who are courageous enough to embrace it in this cynical world.

Zombie 108 Z108地区 ゾンビ包囲網

"Z108" is being screened with my translation at Human Trust Cinema Shibuya Theatre in Tokyo on September 29th (Saturday). The director himself managed cash flow using the Internet while creating such an eye-catching trailer to make it newsy, then succeeded in getting enough money to shoot this feature film. "Z" comes from zombie, and "108" is the postal code of  Nishimonchi, Taipei, where the movie was set. Let's beat the late-summer heat with this frightening horror, ero-guro (erotic and grotesque), zombie film from Taiwan. Speaking of Taiwan, they donated more money to earthquake-stricken Japan (2011.03.11) than any other country in the world. Thank you so much.

Carnage おとなのけんか

The basic premise of the movie is the interactions of two sets of parents who get together for the purpose of an altercation between their children. Jodie Foster（ジョディ・フォスター） and John C. Reilly（ジョン・Ｃ・ライリー） are the parents of the injured child, and Kate Winslet（ケイト・ウィンスレット） and Christopher Waltz（クリストフ・ヴァルツ） are the parents of the boy that hit the other boy. Then, gradually the breakdown of civility between the two parties ensues. The casting was great, dialogue was sharp, I would say it is an excellent dark comedy which requires multiple viewing to understand the characteristics and greatness in the performances of the actors.

Blood Pigs ブラッド 血肉のいけにえ

An apocalyptic zombie with the best gore. Extremely bloody, graphic and inventive. It takes a little while for the blood to start flowing but the last half is almost non-stop gore. The acting and plot were fine for this genre. The zombies were cool looking and the blood pig creatures themselves are very ambitious and gruesome. The bleak grotesque finale gives you a feeling that the blood pigs are everywhere and that humanity is doomed. If you like pure gruesome inventive gore, this is for you.

If you are a fan of the Hellraiser, a popular horror franchise, this chapter might not be satisfying. It is said to have been made on a very strict budget, filmed in a very short time, rushed into and out of production in order to save the studio. Because of the hastiness of the production, long time star Doug Bradley（ダグ・ブラッドレイ） decided not to return as "Pinhead", which might have caused the film to be a little weak and disappointing of the series. Yet it's still interesting to a certain extent offering at least something to satisfy fans' bizarre fascination. Stephan Smith Collins（スティーヴン・スミス・コリンズ） steps into the notorious role of "Pinhead".

The 2009 Swedish film was solid yet the two sequels had their own battles such as lower budget, switching directors, and failed to capture the tenacity the original film offered. David Fincher（デヴィッド・フィンチャー）has put his trademark darkness to fantastic use with this film. The performances are perfect all round, and its clear that Fincher and the casting production succeeded in picking not only great actors but those who embody the very essence of their characters. Though it's not vastly different in comparison to its Swedish counterpart, Fincher has improved upon what was already a fantastic piece of cinema superbly.

The Dead ゾンビ大陸 アフリカン

I would recommend this film to anyone with a taste for horror as well as sentiment and a nice story on its own as one of these rare occasions when a B-Grade budgeted film pulls of something amazing. Set in Africa with old school and slow walking zombies, it is not a regular zombie film, but well filmed, awesomely cast, contains enough horror to satisfy and captivating. It stays true to the classic zombie flick but gives you a bit of a new perspective. Hope to see more and more of Howard & Jon Ford brothers' （ハワード＆ジョンのフォード兄弟）films on higher budget as they deserve them after this one.

The couple's marriage nearly falls apart as each looks for comfort in different ways. The wife finds peace in an odd relationship with the teenage driver who struck their son, yet the husband finds happiness with others outside the home. The acting, especially the two leads, is superb, and there is no happy ending but it has some nice commentary on life and coping with tragedy.

The witty and bright Amanda seems to have fun performing Sophie, and Christopher Egan（クリストファー・イーガン）completes the charming young lead couple.

Nature being the real time of real life, whereas Grace is the more spiritual approach. Clearly, Mr. O'Brien has chosen Nature, while his wife embodies Grace. Watching their three boys evolve in this household is quite a treat.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes 猿の惑星:創世記（ジェネシス）

Plot wise, it's very well told. Though it's not as intelligent as the original, but not dumb either. There is some science fiction in the film as well. As for the human cast, James Franco（ジェームズ・フランコ）seem more natural than Toby Maguire（トビー・マグワイア）, who was originally lined up for the role. Brian Cox（ブライアン・コックス）and Tom Felton（トム・フェルトン）are bad enough as the film requires them to be, and Felton's performance is over-the-top. And the apes. The CGI might not be fully realistic especially when it's mixed with live actors, yet the apes in place of humans are awesome. Director Rupert Wyatt（ルパート・ワイアット）follows blockbuster blueprints from beginning to end.

Fame フェーム

I wouldn't say this remake of "Fame" is better or worse than the original, but believe that comparing them is not fair as there is nearly a 30-year difference between them, which must cause a big difference. Of course, the students were fresh and new with a fine modern take, ant the teachers had the same real-life lessons. Ugly Betty アグリーベティ

A refreshing show based on a soap opera yet its place and the characters are similar to "The Devil Wears Prada プラダを着た悪魔" taking place in the offices of a fancy fashion magazine. The story begins when the former chief editor dies, and the owner puts his son in its place instead of the ambitious lady played by Vanessa Williams（ヴァネッサ・ウィリアムズ）, and much of the plot is taken up with her trying to discredit the new chief. The other part of the series concerns Betty's home life with her father, her sister, and her fashion-conscious nephew. All of the roles are perfectly cast, and Betty's open, outgoing and friendly attitude breaks down barriers between people. She'll let you who you are and be proud of it.

A great Brazilian film with an extremely enjoyable and beautiful photography and a story about existentialism in life and strange yet sincere love. The director, Esmir Filho（エズミール・フィーリョ）had been known for his fine short films, and now he has taken the plunge into features. The young actors provide impressive and natural performance with the conversation and also with the scenes where there's no conversation.

Desperate Housewives デスパレートな妻たち

Teri Hatcher（テリー・ハッチャー）, Marcia Cross（マーシア・クロス）, Felicity Huffman（フェリシティ・ハフマン）, and Eva Longoria（エヴァ・ロンゴリア・パーカー）create the bizarre and satirical world, where each one of them lives the perfect life on the outside. Susan Mayer(Teri Hatcher) is a chirpy woman with an adorable daughter and a great romance with Mike Delfino(James Denton), but her clumsiness always gets her in trouble. Bree Van De Camp(Marcia Cross) loves being perfect yet her husband can't stand her perfection, which means her life consists of struggling to retain her marriage. Lynette Scavo(Felicity Huffman) gets the most sympathy as a career woman on her way to be successful in business while her pregnancy takes it all away and now she has to struggle with the out-of-control children and a husband who just doesn't get it. Gabrielle Solis(Eva Longoria) could be the closest to the most dreaming life of the block mainly due to her rich marriage. All the women shine in their glory of the show and Marc Cherry（マーク・チェリー）has created a masterpiece with this series.

The Switch アラフォー女子のベイビー・プラン

Unmarried Kassie (Jennifer Aniston ジェニファー・アニストン) wants to have a baby and has a sperm party with the donor, Roland(Patrick Wilson パトリック・ウィルソン). Though the deed gets done, the specified cup gets switched by Wally (Jason Bateman ジェイソン・ベイトマン), who are so drunk that he doesn't remember doing it. Seven years later when Wally meets Kassie's son, Sebastian(Thomas Robinson トーマス・ロビンソン), all of their lives start getting more complicated, and, it is Sebastian who will get to you. The chemistry between Kassie and Wally is good for the characters they portrayed, and the banter between them is great. Also comedies come between Wally and Sebastian and they're quite enjoyable. Nice to see Juliette Lewis（ジュリエット・ルイス） being a friend of Jennifer.
